How I Clean My Brushes

Wednesday 15 August 2012

Here are about 80% of my brushes that I have collected over the past few years. They tend to sit in this pot, though my Bobbi Brown Kabuki Brush normally sits next to it because it is too chunky and stubby and I don't mean to discriminate him at all. I'm on the hunt for a cute little container to store them in but for the moment this white cardboard thing works okay.

To wash my brushes I use this Clinique Make Up Brush Cleanser (£12.50 for 236ml). I wet the brushes first in a pool of warm water which takes on excess make-up. I then stand them on a tatty old towel so I can individually wash them. I squirt 2 or 3 sprays on each brush when I am doing a deep cleaning... but if it is a quick job on my foundation brush then I only put 1 on.I massage the formula into the bristles and rinse under warm water until it runs clear.

This is what my sink tends to look like after a deep cleaning session on all of my brushes. It normally all washes off with a general bathroom cleaner type thing.

The last step, is that I leave them to dry. I tend to wipe excess water from the handles and then stand them up in pots but I make sure that they are spacious so they are quicker drying. And I leave them by an open window which also aids the drying. I must admit I do find it really therapeutic to clean my brushes especially on a rainy sunday afternoon. Though rinsing my foundation brush everyday I find a chore and tend to forget and I know that is really naughty of me... oops! :)

Do you enjoy washing your brushes? Or is it a bit of a chore?

  9. Thanks for sharing your method. I like washing my brushes, I use a spray cleanser for quick and fast sanitizing but I love using anti-bacterial dish washing soap with olive oil for deep cleansing my brushes.:D
